Moving in Montreal on July 1st: A Survival Guide Déménager à Montréal le 1er juillet : guide de survie

It's the busiest day of the year. We've worked it for years. Here's the playbook for parking, elevators, timing — and how to avoid being the family eating Tim Hortons on a sidewalk at 2 AM. C'est la journée la plus chargée de l'année. On la vit depuis des années. Voici le manuel : stationnement, ascenseur, horaire — et comment éviter d'être la famille qui mange du Tim Hortons sur le trottoir à 2 h du matin.

July 1st in Quebec isn't just Canada Day — it's moving day for an estimated 100,000 households. Leases historically rolled over on this date, and even though the law no longer requires it, the habit stuck. The result is a single 24-hour window where every truck, dolly, and elevator in the province is booked solid.

We've worked dozens of July 1st rotations. Most people who panic on July 1st made the same three or four mistakes weeks earlier. This guide is how to avoid them.

1. Book your movers in April. Yes, April.

If you're reading this in May or June, our schedule for July 1st is already mostly full — and so is every other reputable mover's. The companies still taking July 1st bookings two weeks out are usually the ones you don't want.

If you've already missed the window, here's what helps:

Tell the truth on the inventory call. Hidden basements, attic sheds, second-floor walk-ups, narrow staircases, garages full of boxes — these are the things that turn a 6-hour move into a 12-hour move. A good mover would rather know on the phone than discover at 11 AM on July 1st.

2. Reserve your parking spot — legally

This is the single most underrated step. Montreal has a free city service for moving day. Apply for a temporary moving sign permit through your borough — most accept requests online, by phone, or in person. The cost is usually nothing or under $50 depending on the borough.

What you get: orange "no parking" signs that reserve the curb in front of your building for the truck. This matters because:

Apply at least 5 business days in advance. The signs need to go up the day before — and yes, you do have to actually post them. Leaving them in your kitchen doesn't count.

3. Book the elevator (and bring extra cardboard)

If you're moving in or out of a condo or apartment building with an elevator, contact your building manager weeks ahead. Most buildings:

If your building won't reserve the elevator on July 1st (some don't, due to demand), the math gets ugly. A 6th-floor walk-up move with stairs only adds 30–50% to labor time. Make sure your quote reflects that.

4. Plan around the construction. There is always construction.

Montreal in July is the opposite of accessible. Major routes — the Ville-Marie tunnel, Décarie, Notre-Dame, Pie-IX — almost always have summer roadwork. Add to that the bike paths that suddenly appeared on your street last fall, and a 24-foot truck has fewer routes than you think.

Two things that help:

5. Pack like the move actually starts at 7 AM

The single biggest delay we see on July 1st isn't traffic — it's people who said they'd be packed and weren't. Every minute the crew spends boxing your kitchen at 8 AM is a minute we're not on the truck.

By the night before:

If you don't have time to pack, we offer full and partial packing services. On July 1st specifically, we recommend booking a packing day on June 30 — the crew packs that day, then we move you the next morning.

6. Your July 1st survival kit

Pack a small bag that does not go on the truck. Keep it with you. Inside:

7. The 80/20 rule of moving day

"Most July 1st disasters aren't caused by the move. They're caused by the things people forgot to do around the move."

By that we mean: hydro and internet transfers booked at the new place. The new building's super reachable. Cable bins (if you're switching) on hand to return equipment. Daycare or babysitting arranged so the kids aren't underfoot at the worst possible moment. The cat in a closed room with food and water (cats run the second the front door opens to a moving crew).

If you're flexible enough to move on July 2nd or 3rd instead, do it. You'll spend half as much, finish twice as fast, and remember the day fondly.
